WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH / MES DE LA HISTORIA DE LA MUJER
March was declared by Congress as National Women’s History Month in 1987. During the month of March we celebrate women’s history. This focus throughout the month provides us with a yearly reminder to celebrate the countless women who have fought for equality, justice, and opportunity. This month reminds us to continue the work and stay committed to advancing the rights and opportunities for all women and girls.
As I personally reflect during Women’s History Month I think about how lucky I am to be leading here at Torrington High School. I feel thankful to be able to serve the staff, students, and families in this community. I am also reminded as to why Women’s History Month is so important. This focus on the achievements of women expands the sense of what is possible for our girls. When girls know about the contributions of women who came before them, it builds respect and self esteem. By sharing these stories and experiences, we not only can celebrate and support the women around us, but together we can advocate and build an equity-minded community. Our girls can see themselves in the women who came before them.
As an educational leader in our community, the quote by Moss Strong resonated with me, “It’s important for kids to see that women can take on both roles as a caretaker and as a leader”. This reminded me to seek out support within my own professional career, as well as to support other women in their professional lives. This month I am going to work to be more intentional about mentorship and support. I am going to work toward creating safe spaces for diversity to thrive. With increased diversity in race, culture, or gender, we gain different perspectives and can ultimately make better decisions for the future. Anything is attainable if we work together.
This month, I challenge you to join me by doing one of the following in honor of Women’s History Month:
- Listen, Love, Have fun, & Learn
- Exercise your voice, share your ideas, & express your strengths
- Build trust & invite others to join the table
- Build a supportive culture & model risk-taking
- Surround yourself with great leaders
- Research, write about, share stories
- Raise awareness of the diversity of women’s experiences and the continued work to be done regarding gender equality
- Check out the Library of Congress at womenhistorymonth.gov
- Raise your voice for women’s rights
- Ejercita tu voz, comparte tus ideas y expresa tus fortalezas
