MS. MARY GRACE HANUSCH - SRA. MARY GRACE HANUSCH
1. What high school did you attend and what were some of your achievements or accomplishments while attending that school?
I attended Litchfield High School, Litchfield, CT. I was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. I was vice president of the Spanish Cub and a member of the yearbook committee.
2. What inspired you to become a Spanish teacher?
I was brought up in a dual language household (Italian) so different cultures always interested me. As a child, I loved going to the airport to pick up family members from overseas so that I could watch the people in the airport coming from different countries in their traditional clothing. My high school only offered Spanish and French. I thought Spanish would be fun to speak. My first Spanish teacher, Mrs. Barnes, was an inspiration for me to become a Spanish teacher.
3. What college did you attend?
I received a bachelor's degree from SCSU and a master's from Fairfield University.
4. Before coming to THS, where did you teach? What made you change schools?
When I first began teaching, I taught at St. Paul's High School in Bristol and then the Bristol Public schools. I took 8 years off to stay at home with my children. I went back to teaching part-time at the Sherman School (7th and 8th grade). When an opening came up at THS, I applied because I prefer to teach high school and it was the city where I lived.
5. What advice would you give students? What advice would you give students that want to study Spanish in the future?
I would tell students to work hard and always do their best. You never know where life will take you so be ready for the ride.
For students interested in continuing Spanish, I would tell them to definitely plan to do at least a semester in a Spanish speaking country. It can really make the language and the culture come to life. It is an experience I will never forget.
Asistí a Litchfield High School, Litchfield, CT. Fui miembra de la National Honors Society y de la National Spanish Honors Society. Fui vicepresidente del Spanish Club y miembro del comité del anuario.
3. ¿A qué universidad asistió?
