Interview with Mr. McSpiritt / Entrevista con el Sr. McSpiritt
1. Can you give us a brief biography of yourself?
I'm starting my 29th year of working in the Torrington Public School System. I first came to Torrington High School in 1993 as an Athletic Director. I then became an
Assistant Principal in 2001 at THS. Later I worked at Torrington Middle School from 2013 to 2019, then once again returned to finish up my career at THS, as I am retiring in June of 2022.
2. What high school did you attend?
I grew up in Verona, New Jersey and attended Verona High School. I graduated in the Spring of 1977. VHS was a similar sized school to THS, about 1,000 students. I was also a student athlete in high school and played soccer, basketball, and baseball. I continued to play soccer in college and still do until this day.
3. What college did you attend? What did you study/major in?
I attended University of Connecticut, (UConn) I graduated in 1982 with a Bachelors in Physical Education and received my Masters in 1984.
4. What other jobs have you had in the past?
I was a College Assistant Soccer Coach at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio for three seasons. I was also a Health and Physical Education teacher in Amenia, New York, six years prior to working in Torrington.
5. What does the community at Torrington High School mean to you?
The community at Torrington High School means so much to me and I have had so many good experiences with all the students, staff, and families. This community means so much it is hard to put into words, as all the relationships I’ve built here mean so much to me. It’s been my professional life for 29 years and I believe I wouldn’t want it any other way.
6. How has Covid-19 affected THS? When do you think we will be able to get back to normal?
I think that it has been a very hard period of time for everyone, especially the students. Covid-19 has changed what a normal high school experience should be. I honestly could not give an answer to when I think everything will get back to normal, but I believe that if everyone continues to cooperate we can get through this.
7. When do you plan to retire?
I plan to retire in June of 2022, after 35 years of working in education. I believe it is just time to slow down a bit and enjoy life more without having to worry about
having a job.
