Why We Celebrate Women’s History Month
Every March marks a special month for women around the world. It is a month that we celebrate the contributions and achievements made by women throughout history. The first celebration of Women’s history was in March of 1982, when Ronald Reagan proclaimed a week of celebration. The length of celebration has since been elongated to further celebrate and show the importance of the month.
In 2011, the Obama administration released a report on the status of women in our society. In this report, it discussed the changes in our society towards women and how we can continue to further that beneficial change. It is without a doubt that women have been, and continue to be, discriminated against in society. This can be seen in the lack of equal opportunity in the workplace and in the gender wage gap. The gender wage gap is a statistic that shows the difference in the national average of men’s yearly pay to that of women’s. According to Business.org, women, on average, still make 18% less in their yearly salary than men. This number has decreased over the past decades, and I hope that it continues to decrease so that women are treated equally to men.
As we celebrate the great achievements of women, it is important to highlight some of the most important ones. In 1903, Marie Curie was the first female to be awarded the Nobel Prize. In August of 1920, the United States declared that all women were created equal to men and were then allowed to vote. In 1942, women served alongside men during World War II. As recently as 1969 women were finally allowed to attend Yale and Princeton Universities. In 2014, Mo’ne Davis became the first girl to pitch a shutout in a Little League World Series game, a very hard achievement at that level. In January of this year, the first woman was elected to office of the Vice-President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris. The achievements of these brave, courageous women have inspired many girls and children around the world to show them that anything is possible.
I admire so many women in my life for all that they do for me. My mother, sister, grandmother, and many more are the reasons that I am who I am today. They have shown me what it means to be unique and follow your heart - which is the same message that all of these women have preached throughout their lives. I admire and commend women throughout history and for all of the bravery and courageousness that they have inspired. It is for these reasons that we celebrate women’s history; and we will continue to celebrate it forever.
