Ms. Emely Murphy, art teacher - Sra. Emely Murphy, maestra de arte
1. What high school did you attend and what were some of your achievements while attending that school?
“I went to the Gunnery, a small private school in Washington, CT, I was able to attend on scholarship. I was part of the national art honors society, Tri M music honors society, I was part of the crew team in the spring and fall, and during the winter I tried basketball one year (not an achievement- I was terrible!) I did a portrait painting independent study where I would have my friends sit in front of me and I would paint their picture, and I also was part of a community service group. I participated in all the plays-I would perform, and also help with hair and makeup. I was also part of a small select chorus that would meet and practice before school.”
2. Why did you choose to study art? What inspired you?
“I have always loved art. Being around it, making it, sharing it with other people. Both of my parents are artists, and spent their careers as art teachers, too! I grew up in a very creative environment where play dates and birthday parties were always filled with art making. If I had a few free minutes, I would do a drawing or make a small project. I was and continue to be inspired by nature, I love the beauty and ever-changing environment we are surrounded by.”
“Siempre he amado el arte.
3. What college did you attend?
“I went to Bard College, a tiny liberal arts school on the shores of the Hudson river about 2 hours north of NYC. My freshman year I took a painting class and fell in love with the department and ended up majoring in fine arts.”

4. Before coming to THS, where did you teach? What made you change schools?
“Before I came to THS, my dream was to be an elementary school teacher and have a third grade class of my own. I was hired in Torrington at Vogel-Wetmore to help support students in math. Before Torrington I had taught at many different schools. I came to THS, because they had an opening for an art teacher, and I had realized that my dream was to share art and the joy of artmaking with young people, and that I needed to take a slightly new and different teaching path.”
5. How do you feel with twins coming your way? Are you excited?
“I am so excited! They are moving around a lot, and with every wiggle, I look forward to meeting them more and more. I am also a little nervous, these are our first children and my husband, and I know that taking care of two babies at once is going to be extremely challenging.”
6. As an art teacher, what advice would you give students that want to study art in the future?
“Do it! Studying art is a wonderful experience, it is an amazing way to engage different parts of your brain, work through visual and spatial problems, to calm yourself and be present, to exercise creativity, to learn about who you are, and to be part of the human experience of appreciating the visual world all around us! Even if you are not sure if you want to study art and pursue a career in the arts, you can always make time in your schedule for an art, film, photo, art history, music, or dance class.”
