MY STORY / MI HISTORIA
My name is Edison Salto, I am 16 years old from Ecuador. I came to the United States at 12 years old because my mother and father had already been here for 10 years.
Previously, my sisters and I had stayed in Ecuador with my grandmother: I stayed for 5 years, my older sister stayed for 7 years, and my younger sister stayed for 2 years. When we got to the United States, everything was different, but I was happy to be able to be with my mother again after so long. A week after arriving, we went to classes. At first, I felt confused since everyone spoke English and I did not, but I was trying to learn more every day since I needed to learn English to progress and keep going. I also met new people and friends, and overtime I have learned a little English. I now understand my teachers and can make new friends, but the more that time has passed, the more I have missed my family and my friends from Ecuador, and to this day I still miss them. When I entered this school, I felt that everything was strange and new: there were new people, teachers, and a school that was very different from what is in Ecuador. We came here because it is a country full of possibilities and because by being here, we can create a better future for ourselves, even though sometimes we have to give up a lot of things we love. I must thank all those people who fought for me to get a better future. In my case, these are my mother and my grandmother, since those two people are the ones who gave me advice and who are now fighting for me to be someone and get a good job in the future. I am now getting used to life here since I have met new friends and teachers. Although at first it was difficult, all this hardship taught me a life lesson: the only impossible thing is that you do not try.
