TEACHERS' APPRECIATION WEEK / SEMANA DE APRECICIÓN DEL MAESTRO
Teachers play an extremely vital role in the lives of several students. From preschool to one’s senior year, students not only acquire knowledge from various disciplines through their teachers, but they also gain mentors and good memories that they will cherish beyond the classroom.
Educators dedicate much of their time and energy to invest in every student in the classroom and out of the classroom, and because of the work teachers do to help every student thrive, they are able to witness the early development of future innovators and professionals who will go on to make significant and meaningful contributions to our society. There is no doubt that teachers put in an enormous effort to help students, and they wholeheartedly deserve much praise for the work that they do. This is why every year, a week of appreciation is given to teachers in May. Teachers’ Appreciation Week is a time for teachers to be celebrated and for their efforts to be acknowledged.
One may be wondering, “How did Teachers’ Appreciation Week even begin?”. The idea of a Teachers’ Appreciation week became popularized in 1953, when President Eleanor Roosevelt asserted to Congress that there needed to be a day of recognition dedicated to teachers. While Congress was in favor of celebrating teachers through a national holiday, Teachers’ Appreciation Day was not established until 1980, when the National Education Association successfully lobbied Congress to officially declare it a holiday. Initially, only one day was dedicated to showing appreciation to teachers. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association expanded the day to one week, and they moved the original date from March 7 to the beginning of May.
The purpose of Teachers’ Appreciation Week is to honor all of the educators that take the time to cultivate meaningful connections with students and help students acquire the skills they need to thrive after they graduate. When Teachers’ Appreciation comes around, make sure to give your teachers a token of appreciation, even if it is just telling your teachers, “thank you”. Teachers dedicate a lot of their time to helping students, and it is important to let teachers know that they are valued.
