NUEVA EXPERIENCIA EDUCACIONAL
From my personal experience, the educational system from the United States is very different from Ecuador. I've been in the U.S for about 1 year and a half, yet I find so many unusual things that I never saw before. It was normal for me to see every student wearing a uniform even after high school in some universities. And the school itself taught us that wearing a uniform was a sign of respect for the institution and we used to get reported if we didn't follow the dress code. The transfer between classes was also new for me, the teachers were the ones who changed rooms and the students were separated by specific groups until graduation. That's why I never walked behind a crowd of students after every class.
One thing that I struggled with when I came to THS is social relationships. I knew my classmates in Ecuador since I was in 3rd grade and coming here as a new student where everyone has their own group of people was stressful. Indeed, this method helps you to meet new people from other classes and It’s more effective for teachers. The device's restrictions are a new rule for me since we had freedom to use our phones during free time, lunch or while switching classes. During lunch time we are required to stay in the cafeteria until the bell rings. We were also allowed to leave with a pass from a teacher which is dissimilar from Ecuador where schools are mainly builded with an open infrastructure allowing the students to walk everywhere, in the library, hallways, stadium, stay in the classroom, etc. The kind of food we are served is totally different; now I can get the same food that everyone gets for free (it is usually pizza or nuggets). I had more options. I used to buy something to eat for less than a dollar, then I walked along with my friends around the school.
The education level seemed easy for me at first when I came here. I got a lot of projects every week before and mathematics was hard to understand. Now I'm studying topics that I saw years ago. I see it as a good opportunity to review sections that I have already forgotten. The schedule was hard to follow on my first day, with all the information about two buildings, room numbers, the Advisory class once or twice a week and the classes we skip every day was so confusing. The distribution of classes was only one throughout the whole year for everyone in the same classroom. The pledge of allegiance is something I don't get used to. It doesn't compare to my last school where we sang the national anthem every Monday together with all the students and teachers in the main courtyard.. Surely I no longer feel the same excitement during holidays now, they are mainly celebrated within each family. Back then we used to play at school, watch cultural performances, each class had to collaborate on every holiday, and days off were significantly fewer than today. Honestly speaking, I'm not used to THS, I reckon it's a great school with a lot of supportive people. But for someone who has left his life behind, it's an anxious process I have to go through.
