JULIA ÁLVAREZ
Julia Alvarez was born in New York City on March 17, 1950. Three months after her birth, her parents returned to the Dominican Republic after a self-imposed exile from the dictatorship of General Rafael Trujillo. When her parents became involved in a clandestine movement to overthrow Trujillo Julia and her family were forced to flee the Dominican Republic to escape imprisonment.
When Julia and her family returned to the United States, Julia was 10 years old and had a difficult time adjusting to her new life and learning English. Difficulties adjusting to immigrant life and learning English.
The immigrant experience and bicultural identity are themes that Julia touches on in her first novel “De cómo las muchachas García perdieron el acento”; which was published in 1991. The novel is about the interrelated stories told by the four Garcia sisters as they describe their difficulties adjusting to New York City after leaving the Dominican Republic.
Julia brought feminist ideas that women could also achieve academic success as she did. This makes her one of the most important Latin American writers because her literary themes contradict the patriarchal system within Latin American cultures. Some of her works are: En el tiempo de las Mariposas, De cómo las muchachas García perdieron el acento, ¡Yo!, El otro lado.
Her work has won numerous awards including The Caldecott Medal, The Sibert Medal, the 2009 F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Excellence in American Literature, as well as the Hispanic Heritage Award in 2002.

JUNOT DÍAZ
Junot Diaz was born in the Dominican Republic and was raised in New Jersey after moving with his family in search of a better future. Junot was never at the top of his class but from a young age he showed great interest in reading and writing.
Diaz attended Rutgers University and received his B.A. in History and Literature. After going to Rutgers, Diaz pursued a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Cornell. It was there that he began writing the short stories that would eventually form his first published collection called Drown (1996). Yunior, a young Dominican immigrant who later narrates Diaz's first novel.
A theme that runs throughout Diaz's work and that I personally like a lot is the disillusionment of the “Dominican Dream”; and the idea that Dominican immigrants to the United States acclimate easily to American culture and quickly gain wealth and status.
Today Junot is one of the Dominicans who has influenced literature in the United States and continues to do his work as a professor of Creative Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Some of his best works: Islandborn, This is How You Lose Her, Drown.

Algunas de sus mejores obras: Islandborn, This is How You Lose Her, Drown.
