CATHERINE BUTRICK
2018 THS GRADUATE - 2021 CHAMPLAIN COLLEGE GRADUATE
Summa Cum Laude
An Interview with a THS Alumna
Entrevista con una ex alumna de THS.
Catherine Butrick graduated from Torrington High School in 2018. This May she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. In this interview, Catherine tells us about her college experience, her plans moving forward, and how THS prepared her for higher education.
What did you study in college?
I majored in Professional Writing with a concentration in editing and publishing.
Why did you choose that major?
While I’ve always loved writing, I actually chose my major because I enjoyed editing more at the time. Champlain is one of the few colleges in the United States that offers a career-focused degree with a concentration in editing and publishing. I didn’t want a general English or Literature degree.
What kind of activities were you involved in during your time at Champlain?
I was involved in a lot. I held two student-leadership positions over my three years, was connected to every student publication in one way or another and completed several independent projects with various professors. Most of the activities revolved around writing and communication, though.
What are your post-graduate plans?
Well, right now I have a nine-week internship with a local nonprofit, Community of Vermont Elders. I’m focusing on building their outreach through social media and advertising, as well as doing some grant writing and helping with long-term development planning.
After that, I’m going to Bulgaria for two months for an internship with another nonprofit, SolidarityWorks, that focuses on program coordination and facilitation. I’m really excited because most of the programs they run are international, so I’ll get to meet a bunch of new people from around the world.
What led you to pursue nonprofit work and how did you get these cool opportunities?
I kind of just fell into it. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do going into college—which was to be a developmental editor for novels—but then my interests changed, and I started exploring different industries.
One of my professors introduced me to the nonprofit world. We were casually talking one time, and he mentioned his connection to SolidarityWorks and asked if I would be interested in an internship. I said yes, of course, and we planned for me to spend summer 2020 in Bulgaria. That didn’t end up happening because of COVID-19, but I did still complete a remote internship and really fell in love with the work SolidarityWorks was doing.
Fast forward a few months, and I stumbled upon another nonprofit internship (with Community of Vermont Elders) through a virtual event I went to that reaffirmed my passion for the industry.
How did your education at THS help you prepare for college and your future?
THS taught me how to juggle many things at once. It taught me how to prioritize important tasks and manage a heavy workload without feeling constantly overwhelmed.
I also took all the possible Spanish classes while at THS which helped me immensely when I studied abroad in Sevilla, Spain. I wasn’t perfectly fluent, and luckily my host family spoke English too, but I had a really good grasp of the language. Because of that, I was able to interact with locals easier and had a more meaningful experience overall than I would have had otherwise.
Most importantly, though, THS taught me the importance of maintaining meaningful connections. I’ve stayed in touch with most of my teachers, and they’ve been invaluable resources. They’ve helped me navigate sources for big research papers, provided me with additional materials to help me master a topic I was struggling with, and just reminded me that I have people who believe in me and support me and want to see me succeed.
