March is Women’s History Month and it is very important to celebrate. It is the month when we look at the conditions that women had in the past and see how far we have come. It is important that we study the past so that we don’t repeat it in the future. In the past, women didn’t have many rights. There were many expectations in society that women would stay at home to clean, take care of their children, and cook. Women weren’t allowed to do many things like working, voting, or participating in politics. Basically, women didn’t have a voice in society. There are many books that describe what life was like for women in history. For example, in Como agua para chocolate, which is a book by Laura Esquivel which takes place in the nineteen hundreds, Tita, the main character, couldn’t get married because her mother wanted Tita to take care of her. Another example is in Nada menos que todo un hombre by Miguel Unamuno. In this book, the father of a girl named Julia didn’t have a lot of money. Because of this, he wanted Julia to get married to a rich man. This was the reality for many women in history, in these books show that.
Now, while women have more rights than the women of the nineteen hundreds, it still isn’t perfect. In nineteen-twenty, the women of the United States won the right to vote. After that, women started to become equal in society with more jobs, protective laws, and opportunities. But, today in society, there are still inequalities between men and women within their salaries, politics, violence, and stereotypes. That’s why every year many people in many cities in the United States protest and march in the streets to create more equality for women. Also, this is why we celebrate women’s history month: because we acknowledge all of the rights that women have gained, and continue to push for total equality.
