1. Mrs .Gamari, could you give us a brief biography on yourself?
I have lived in Torrington my entire life. I have a husband, Eric, who is also a teacher at THS. We have two beautiful children, Maya (7) and Owen (5), who attend Torringford Elementary School. I try to give back to my community in a variety of ways; I was the Head Volleyball Coach for THS for seven years, and currently am an assistant coach for our Unified Sports program. I am the THS Varsity Club Advisor, which unifies all athletes in the hope of instilling in them the importance of good character, sportsmanship, leadership and integrity. I work on a number of grant projects at THS that strive for equity and enrichment within our school community. I have volunteered for the Police Athletic League (PAL) program for over seven years. For the past two winter seasons I have been the "coordinating coach" for the Grade 1-4 PAL Citywide Basketball Program. I plan the practices, recruit and mentor high school athletes to be counselors, and also serve in an advisory capacity for basketball programming. I am the Vice President of the Torrington Varsity Alumni Club (VAC), a position that I hold dear due to the rich legacy and contributions of the club to the Torrington community. I help to organize the scholarship application process, its corresponding banquet, and many other VAC events such as the Raider Run, The Track and Field Challenge, and the Alumni Day events. 2. Did you attend Torrington High school? What years did you attend? What activities or sports did you do? I attended THS and graduated as part of the Class of 2004. I was on the volleyball, basketball and track teams. I was in Student Council, serving as Vice President of my class, and I was also President of the National Honor Society. 3. Were you a valedictorian? Yes. 4. How or what inspired you to become a teacher? Many teachers first learn about the art of teaching through their college education classes or student-teaching experiences. I have been learning how to teach for my entire life, studying under one of the best mentors in the profession - my mom. I witnessed early on that this calling requires a deep love of learning, compassion for children, and selflessness. As a young child, I studied how my mom wrote notes all over her students’ papers because it was important that they fully understood their mistakes and celebrate their successes, even though it increased her grading time. I watched as she brought her best to her students every day, even if she didn’t always feel able to. I attended countless sporting events, concerts, plays, and fundraisers so my mom could show all of her students that she cared about them outside her classroom, too. My mom’s passion for her life’s work inspired me to become a teacher, too. 5. What college did you attend? I attended the College of the Holy Cross (2004-20008) in Worcester, Massachusetts. I was a Biology Major in the Pre-Medicine Program. I also was in the Teacher Preparation Program and completed my student-teaching experience at Burncoat High School in Worcester. I played on the Holy Cross volleyball team and was selected as the 2008 "Crusader of the Year" for my hard work on the court, in the classroom, and within the community. 6. What schools did you teach in before coming to THS? After graduating from college, I taught at Naugatuck High School for five years. I taught Biology, different Science electives, and Physical Science. When I had my daughter, Maya, I decided to work closer to home and took a job teaching 8th grade science at Torrington Middle School. I was at TMS for five years before I was able to come work at THS. 7. What did it feel like to return to the school that you attended as a student and come back as a teacher? It has always been a dream of mine to work at Torrington High School, however it was also important for me to start out somewhere where I could establish myself as a teacher on my own. I loved my colleagues and experience at Naugatuck High School, but an opportunity presented itself to finally work in Torrington, and I knew I needed to make a change. I love Torrington - I have lived here my entire life and this community means the world to me. I want my students to see and know that. Torrington is a special place - one that maybe only people who live here or grew up here can truly understand. We are fiercely proud of this community and often go above and beyond to support each other, especially during tough times. There are few things I know for certain: but I do know that like me, my children will be products of the Torrington Public School system; and I know that with whatever the future will bring, I will continue connecting with and giving back to a community that has already given so much to me. 8. You have been selected teacher of the year. What does this mean to you? How does this make you feel? I am incredibly honored and humbled by this recognition. This award doesn't only belong to me; it belongs to my family for the countless sacrifices they have made for me; it belongs to my colleagues, who have really become some of my best friends, who have challenged me to grow in ways I never thought possible and for the hours of work we have spent collaborating together; it belongs to the Administrators who showed faith and trust in me to take on leadership roles within my school communities; it belongs to all of my coaches, teachers, and mentors in my life who instilled in me the importance of family, education, and community. While this award may represent the pinnacle of my career, it does not define me, and it will not be the end of my journey as an educator. I will continue to grow and improve so that I can be the best for all of my students and help them reach their full potential. 9. What does a classroom mean to you? What is your philosophy regarding education? There are few professions that can have such a meaningful impact on the next generation. I can help a passive student develop her voice in collaborative activities and learn that she has leadership potential. I can help a disengaged student find something that he is good at and use that connection to spark his interest in other topics of study. I can challenge a student to never accept the status quo and to ask critical questions. Over the course of a single school year, I have the privilege of witnessing students become better communicators, collaborators, and problem-solvers and, most importantly, I get to witness their excitement over their growth, as well. I want learning to feel fun and not like a chore. I want to build a classroom community where students feel like they have a voice and that their opinion matters. I want to recognize my students as individuals and meet the needs of all of the learners in my classroom as best I can. 10. What advice can you give to students in general? Work hard and believe in yourself. I don't think I was the smartest person in my high school or college classes, but I put the time in to make myself better. I also think that students should know that it is ok to change paths in life. I went to college to be a doctor because that's what the adults told me I should do. I needed to have the courage to reflect and figure out what was important to me and who I wanted to become. I never regret my decision to pursue education instead of medicine. I only regret decisions that I made for other people, instead of myself. Christine Gamari Science Teacher Science Department Chair Torrington High School [email protected] |
1.-Sra. Gamari ¿Nos podría dar una breve biografía suya?
He vivido en Torrington toda mi vida.
