Mr. Victor Leger/Sr. Víctor Leger
Mr. Leger was born in Goose Bay, Labrador, a Canadian province about a thousand miles from Torrington. He was two and a half years old when his family had moved to Hartford, CT. He says he always had an interest in drawing and painted regularly in high school. His father dying by the time he was in eighth grade and his mother working an office job with no savings, Mr. Leger believes he was very fortunate to have had good teachers to guide him into a full scholarship into the best art schools in America. He's gone to Pratt Institute, specializing in paint. Before coming to Torrington High School in 2000, Leger had already taught in three elementary schools in four years in New Haven, then another year in Waterbury. Having begun to teach intermediate schools in 1994 and continuing his work at urban schools for six years, Leger found THS as an ideal school. He thinks the school would benefit from more resources, yet he thinks there are enough to teach effectively, and that the students being taught are very polite. He states "Like many teachers I chose to be a teacher so I could make a positive difference in students' lives,". "I believe I have at least three qualities to be a good teacher; one, I know my content (art) very well. But more important is a decent sense of humor and lots of patience" he concludes. Mr. Leger explains that art for him is very important, that he finds every creative process stimulating and enriching to his life. He does not think he will ever stop painting- it being a rewarding way to pass time. He is under the impression that he was lucky to be in various national exhibits and win international prizes. He has been highlighted in numerous regional and national art magazines as well. In September. Mr. Leger will take part in a prestigious group show named New American Realism at the New Britain Museum of American Art, a solo show following next September at the Five Points Gallery located in downtown Torrington. "Overall I live a very charmed life, I have the greatest job that I love and people enjoy looking at and buying my paintings. But most of all I have been blessed with a wonderful wife of 35 years, with three adult children and six grandchildren who all live within 30 minutes of here."
