THE SCHOOLS AND THE PANDEMIC

LAS ESCUELAS Y LA PANDEMIA
|
When schools of different grade levels were forced to close at the beginning of March, universities quickly adapted to the distance learning system using the educational tools provided by cyber technology. In fact, they had been offering distance classes using the Internet for years at all levels, which undoubtedly eased the transition. On the other hand, university students are emotionally much more mature to be able to have the responsibility of managing their education in the face of a problem like the one we are experiencing.
Meanwhile, the high, middle, and elementary schools faced, what is commonly said, each man for himself. Given the short time that the authorities of each educational system in the state allotted to face the crisis, each school was forced to use one of the educational platforms that exist in the digital market (e.g. Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.), to complete the interrupted year. While this is a smooth transition in theory, the situation was critical because the younger the student, the greater the need for an older person to be in charge of supervising them. The problem was further aggravated because the adults who took charge at home lacked the necessary technological familiarity to be able to guide and help the young students. In addition, another harsh reality had to be faced: lack of computers and internet access in some homes. In short, one way or another, the school year came to an end, with relative success. For this new academic year that is beginning, the school systems have been better prepared to be able to face the situation in which we now live. They have ensured that each student has a computer, and they have investigated and searched for educational programs and systems that are better adapted to the pedagogical needs and reality of their schools and of the young students they must serve. In most of the state schools, the so-called hybrid system is being used, that is to say, a combination of face-to-face and distance classes—something that, so far, is working under the threat of the sword of Damocles, which is to say that at any moment signs of the cursed disease appear, causing schools to close for a few days, as has already happened in some towns. The Hybrid system, as its name implies, is a mixture of face-to-face and distance classes, keeping all the health protocols that are necessary in these high times. First, the students are divided into two groups, say A and B; While group A physically attends classes the first days of the week, group B stays at home, but actively participates in class through their computers, which, in many cases, have been previously distributed weeks before the start of the school year. Then, on Thursdays and Fridays the order is reversed, group B attends face-to-face classes while those of A stay at home participating online in the educational process. One day is used at the discretion of the school systems; some use it to reinforce sanitary measures of disinfecting school premises, while others make all students stay home participating in online reinforcement classes for the two groups. On the other hand, there is a third group of students whose parents prefer that they stay home by taking classes only online. The Hybrid system, while not the ideal strictly speaking in educational terms, also allows the crowding in the classrooms and hallways to be reduced by half. The classrooms have been arranged to accommodate fewer students than their normal capacity allows, and the recommended social distance of six feet between each student is maintained. Likewise, it also allows one-way traffic in the corridors of the schools to avoid, as much as possible, physical contact between students. Now, some school systems are offering 100 percent face-to-face classes, especially in the early grades, and are trying systems like the Hybrid—tailored to the educational reality of the community they serve. Another problem faced by educational systems is that of Special Education for students with disabilities, who have the right to have access to the same opportunities that are offered to all students, including an appropriate public education. As far as possible, each student will receive the educational attention and services they need, which are detailed in their IEP; the same applies to those students who need the special accommodations and modifications required by their 504 plan. As you can see, the educational process that have begun this year are completely different from all that we have seen previously; it implies close collaboration between parents and educators—something that must exist in regular times, because the commitment to the education of children not only is the sole responsibility of the teachers; parents must take an active part in it as well. We are living in difficult times, in which what is humanly possible must be done so that our youth receive the education they deserve.
