JULIA ALVAREZ
Julia Alvarez was born on March 27, 1950 in New York City. She’s the second of four daughters. Three months after Alvarez was born her family went back to their native island, Dominican Republic, where her father joined a group to overturn the dictatorship of General Rafael Trujillo. When Alvarez was 10 her family had to flee the Dominican Republic again to avoid imprisonment. In the US she had a hard time adjusting and she was feeling homesick. She was also tormented by her peers and she was facing prejudice. That’s when she started writing, because although she wasn’t familiar with the English language she felt comfortable writing in English. The first book she wrote was, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, she published the book in 1991 when she was 41 years old. Some of her popular books you may know include, In The Time of The Butterflies, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, and Yo! Alvarez has written many books but two of them won her two awards, Before We Were Free won her the 2004 Pura Belprè Narrative Award and Return to Sender won her the 2010 Narrative Award. You may think Julia Alvarez is only important to the Latino community but she’s important to other communities. She’s important to many communities because her books talk about topics many people relate to, her books talk about identity, cultural divides, and family. She also brought up the idea that women can also accomplish educational success. This went against many traditional family rules back then. I recommend you read Alvarez’s books as you’ll probably find something in her books you relate to and if you don’t find anything, you would learn to see life in a different perspective. I recommend you read Return to Sender, as it is a good book you’ll enjoy.
