RETURNING TO SCHOOL
They say that all good things are short-lived. This adage fits our young students like a glove, who after a fairly hot summer, sleeping a few hours too many and spending more time on their cell phones, see how the days go by quickly and they will soon be back in the classroom.
Now, it is necessary to remember that we are only just coming out of the terrible pandemic that has kept us in turmoil for the last two years, which means that we are not yet completely safe; hence it is necessary to continue maintaining the same precautions. Students need to get used to continuously washing their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and, if this is not possible, use disinfectant liquid that has at least 60 percent alcohol. Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth if you have not washed your hands first. Avoid contact with people who have been infected. Stay home if you were unlucky enough to get infected and get used to cleaning and disinfecting objects and surfaces that are frequently touched and used.
It is necessary to point out that, although the use of masks is no longer mandatory in schools, attempts have been made to control the crowd and, with it, contact with possible infected people. However, this does not mean that, in one way or another, the virus does not reach educational centers and affects not only children but also teachers and all those who, directly or indirectly, have to do with the development of cognition in our youth.
Continuing with the schools, at the end of the academic year, students receive a list of books that must be read during their vacation. Apart from the list of books that the school provides, there are a series of classic and modern books that should be read by children, young people, and adults at any time of the year. Special mention should be made of the magazines and newspapers whose reading, in any language, updates and informs the reader about what is happening in the world around them, which is often ignored in favor of new technology, whether they are called video games or brand-new musical gadgets that, as if they were a permanent part of the auditory system, and are attached to the ear at all times, and that do nothing but isolate the user and create in them a selfish, self-centered personality and absolute indifference to what happens around them. It is time for reading to recover the place it should have as a means of educating and entertaining youth. Parents have a lot of responsibility in that task.
About the famous cell phones, which are computers, many of them with great capacity and speed that are always used by students and in all places, including the classroom, to the point that many educational systems in the state are starting to take action on it. For example, in the school where I teach, in the last three months of the last academic year, 0 tolerance was imposed on the use of the blessed little device, that is, they began to take the bull by the horns. It worked, but there were those who still believe that the rules are not for them. This year, whether they like it or not, when students enter the school, they will have to put their “essential” cell phone in an electronic bag that they can only open before leaving the school. As our grandparents used to say, “when the dog is dead, the rabies is over”, and… to cry on the beach.
